World Tourism Day 2013
Mahaweli Reach Hotel conducted a Workshop on Conservation of water in commemoration of World Tourism Day 2013 on 27th September 2013 under the theme 'Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future'. The keynote speaker at this Workshop was leading environmental scientist and head of the Colombo University, Zoology department, Professor Sarath Kotagama who has done extraordinary service to Sri Lanka as an ornithologist and Environmentalist. He was awarded the "2003 Distinguished Service Award for Environment Education and Journalism" by the International Society for Conservation Biology. The session was attended by associates of the hotel and students from schools in the vicinity . Professor Kotagama spoke on the significance of water in a thought provoking lecture that addressed water issues both locally and globally.
The lecture was organized by the hotel to educate staff and the community on environmental issues concerning the planet and the importance of Water as a natural resource and its conservation especially for future generations in an endeavour to educate the younger generation in environmentally sound practices and thereby develop socially responsible citizens.
